Mel and Faye’s Diner

So my dad was asked to go check out a house in scenic Volcano, CA (look it up on gmaps, if you’re curious). We had to stop in Jackson to pick up the lockbox key on the way, so we decided to have lunch in town as well. The agent recommended Mel and Faye’s diner as a good spot. Upon arrival, we really couldn’t tell if it was a Mel’s Diner chain, so we actually left and looked for somewhere else. Eventually, we couldn’t really find anywhere else, so we went back and determined it likely was it’s own independent restaurant.

The joint has a to-go window outside, and a small-town Midwest feel to it – you know, the sort of place you’d see off of US-66 (RIP) 300 miles from anywhere. It was a friendly vibe though – I liked it.

I ended up settling on a cheeseburger (surprise!) with frings. I think it was called a Mooburger. Anyway, my initial observation was that they broke the law of frozen onion rings. Frozen store-bought onion rings suck. That’s just all there is to it. To be honest, these rings weren’t very good. On the french fry side of things, though, I was much more satisfied. Probably frozen, but still tasty. You can often get away with frozen fries if they aren’t limp and soggy, but frozen onion rings are a no-brainer.

As for the burger itself, I had few complaints. I would hazard a guess that it is one of the better burgers in the gold country area. It was cooked to my liking, and had some good flavor. The one odd thing about the burger, as you’ll note on the picture at the top of the page, is that the cheese was melted on the lettuce and onions, rather than on the burger itself. I am not sure if this was intentional, or just a spaz, but it stuck out like a sore thumb. Cheese = melted on the burger!

All in all, it was a good lunch, as part of a nice day trip to the gold country. Mel and Faye’s probably wouldn’t stand out in a big city, but it’s a fun little joint in a cozy little gold country town. I imagine it would be a good spot for groups.
